Milestone Construction recently had the honor of serving as General Contractor on a special
residential build in Lincolnton, GA for Homes for Our Troops (HFOT)—a national nonprofit
that builds and donates custom, specially adapted custom homes for severely
injured post-9/11 Veterans, to enable them to rebuild their lives.
This home was built for Army Captain Joseph Caley, who sustained life-altering injuries during
his service in Iraq. HFOT welcomed Joe into the family and chose Milestone as the general contractor for the building of his future forever home. Although residential construction isn’t typically our focus, we were proud to step in as the home builder for this meaningful project.
Built on a 240-day construction schedule, the home includes 4,173 square feet under roof and
2,870 square feet of conditioned space. It features over 40 special major adaptations to support Joe’s independence and quality of life:
- Widened doorways and hallways
- Roll-under countertops, stovetop, and sinks
- Pull-down shelving
- Roll-in shower
- Wave plate door openers and sliding windows
- Whole-home backup generator
- A safe room built into the primary closet
Each HFOT home is mortgage-free and built where the Veteran chooses to live. These homes are more than accessible—they’re life-changing, designed to empower Veterans in their roles as parents, spouses, and community members.
For us, this project was personal. Ryan Cato, part of our team, met Joe a few years ago through
the Veterans Golf Association. When the opportunity came to help, it was a clear yes.
The Lincolnton community came out in full force to support Cpt. Caley throughout the project. On June 21st, Volunteer Day, friends of Joe and local residents helped lay 10,000 square feet of sod in the yard.

Then, on July 19th, the Key Ceremony, members of the community celebrated the completion of the home with a ribbon-cutting and officially awarded the keys to Joe and his family.

We’re grateful to HFOT for the opportunity to serve—and to Joe for his service and sacrifice.
