The Role of Underground Detention Systems in Modern Construction Projects

Underground detention systems play an essential role in construction projects by managing stormwater and supporting site development in areas with limited previous surfaces. As urban and industrial construction expands, these systems have become a common solution for preventing excess runoff and ensuring construction safety during heavy rain events.

Although the installation process of an underground detention system has its own complexities, it enables land development in areas that would otherwise be unsuitable for building. Once installed, the system blends seamlessly with finished site conditions and can be covered with various finishes, including concrete, asphalt, or landscaping, providing a clean and functional surface. These systems are available in diverse sizes and configurations, tailored to the infiltration rates of existing site conditions.

The installation begins with careful excavation to the appropriate subgrade, followed by the placement of geo-textile fabric to keep the system separate from surrounding soil. A layer of washed gravel, typically 6-12 inches deep, is then added. Chambers are placed within this foundation and backfilled with additional washed gravel to provide at least 12 inches of coverage. At this stage, the system achieves the bearing capacity needed to support heavy loads, making it suitable for commercial construction applications.

Once complete, the underground detention system is connected to the broader stormwater management system, allowing runoff to flow at a controlled rate and reducing the risk of erosion and flooding. In this example, PaveDrain pavers enhance the system’s volume, further reinforcing stormwater infrastructure on site. PaveDrain system also allows stormwater to pass through directly into the detention system and prevents ponding unlike typical asphalt that relies on runoff rather than absorption (picture below showing how dry the pavers are relative to the asphalt). Underground detention systems exemplify modern construction practices and help facilitate efficient, sustainable construction in today’s growing urban landscape.

At Milestone Construction, we take full-service commercial construction seriously — no matter the task. We are the source for complete project transformation from the very beginning to the ending.
